Pavlakos was completing his final semester to earn a Master’s degree in Taxation at the Anderson Schools of Management. The competition, which was hosted by EdVenture Partners, challenges students to answer analytical questions and analyze situations of interest regarding Cadillac’s brand positioning, communication strategy and current strategic situation. Participants from universities nationwide presented to Cadillac’s marketing firm, Modernista, in May 2007. This year the Cadillac campaign was called “Life, Liberty. And the Pursuit.” Pavlakos and his team were tasked with creating a consumer-focused marketing plan for the 2008 Cadillac CTS. Part of the marketing plan was to promote the new vehicle and showcase its features to the target audience chosen by Pavlakos and his team. They chose the target audience of “Move-Ups,” which consists of younger men and women who are finishing college and are now capable and interested in a move into the entry-level luxury car segment for the first time. The marketing plan devised by Pavlakos and his team consisted of a PowerPoint presentation supported by physical displays of their creative ideas to 15 marketing executives from Cadillac and the other competitors in the final round from Virginia Commonwealth University. “I really enjoyed presenting our campaign to the Cadillac executives. It helped that we all shared the presenting and explained our findings as a coherent team,” explained Pavlakos. “The marketing plan targeted the people who worked on these particular case studies, so it was helpful using our opinions to tie into the actual research. I’m already a car enthusiast so it was exciting to really get into the details of the manufacturer.” Pavlakos joined Pulakos & Alongi as an intern and became a full-time staff member of the firm in 2005 when he completed his Bachelor of Business Administration degree in accounting at UNM.
